Holy Communion
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins
Jesus being a prophet always told the disciples what will happen and how to prepare themselves for it. Strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter. Jesus knew that there was a chance for the disciples to forget him when he was not physically present with them or when they experience difficult times. He gave them the wine and stated it was his blood which is shed for not just the disciples but for many, for the remission of sins.
Blood is very important to life. It is life itself and without it a person will die.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’ Leviticus 17:11
God’s provision for atonement of sin
We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23. We deserved to die, but God loves us so much and provided the blood of animals as sin offering. A sinner will present an animal to the priest, place their hand on the animal and confess their sins. The animal then takes the place of the sinner and is sacrificed on the altar of God as an atonement for the soul of the sinner. This meant the animal died in place of the sinner and the sinner gets to go free being acquitted. These sacrifices were offered regularly because people could not stop sinning. Read Hebrews 10
Why should we take Holy Communion?
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
Taking communion is an important part of every Christian’s life. Just as blood in our human body delivers necessary substances like oxygen and vital nutrients to our body cells and transports metabolic waste products away from our cells (wikipedia), the blood of Jesus supplies our bodies with the nutrients necessary for our sustenance, and removes toxic sins out of our lives. What can wash away our sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Jesus said ‘do this in remembrance of me’. Lockdown or no lockdown, get your holy communion wine and keep remembering Jesus’s sacrifice for you. This will also be a great gift for a fellow Christian.
