The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it
Proverbs 10:22
Strive to receive the blessings of God because when God blesses you, the little in your hand can go a long way. While others are struggling to make ends meet even with a good paid job and overtime work, others will work less hours on an average salary but have more because they are blessed. Jesus fed the multitude with just five loaves of bread and two fishes.
I am sure you have heard about many rich people, millionaires and billionaires who have spent time in rehab for various mental health issues or addictions and those who have also committed suicide due to reasons only known to themselves.
This tells us that one can be very rich but be burdened with lots of sorrow while another will be very rich and happy. Not all rich people are happy, the difference between the sad rich person and the average person who is always happy is the blessing of God.
Without the blessings of God, the devourer comes to destroy what we have, big or small. It is therefore very important to know how to secure God’s blessing and live under open heavens all the time.
To receive the blessings of God, we must do the following;
1. Serve God
Serving God is not the same as going to church. When we go to a restaurant, we expect to be served, we do not go to a restaurant to serve others but we sit down and place our orders and someone whose job it is to serve comes in to serve or wait on us, called waiters.
There are two types of people in this example, those serving and those enjoying the service. Similarly when we go to church and just sit there expecting others (church workers) to serve us and minister to our physical, spiritual, social, psychological, and emotional needs, we are there to be served but not to serve.
God made us to serve him, to have a personal relationship with him and to make him our top priority.
Afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Let My people go, that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness.’
Exodus 5:1
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:45
Another example of Jesus serving can be seen in John 13:1-17, when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. The apostles served, they were not just following Jesus. Their life was a service to God, everything they did was centred on God. God was their priority.
And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ Luke 4:8.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Matthew 6:33
We owe God our lives, our life is not our own. God made us for his service but we have become so focused on the material things and God is either the last on our list or not on the list at all. Jesus acknowledged the work and service of the Church in Ephesus and Thyatira in the book of Revelations.
How do you serve?
Be led by the Holy spirit. Pray and ask God what you can do in service to God at home or work, in your church, in the community, as a mother, a wife, a friend, worker etc. Find out what you can do for God and do it. Jesus said I came not to do my own will but the will of the father. I only do what I see my father do.
Sharing the word of God is an example of service to God. Ushering in the church, cleaning and maintaining our churches, homes or workplaces are all examples of ways we can serve God. ‘Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going’ (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
Benefits of serving God
We must serve only the Lord our God, anything that takes first place in our lives has become a god that we serve. Anything that takes most of our time has become a god to us. Exodus 23:25-28 outlines how God blesses us for serving him.
And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee. There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.
I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee. And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.
Exodus 23:25-28
2. Love God
But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
Matthew 22:34-37
We must love the Lord with all our heart, all our soul and all our mind. Chasing after worldly things with all our strength and giving God what is left over is not acceptable. No one will accept that in any kind of relationship. When you are with someone you truly love, time is the last thing on your mind.
We are not lovers of God if we cannot forget about time in God’s presence. Lovers just want to remain in God’s presence. Lovers always want to spend quality time together which strengthens the relationship. The same is true for our relationship with God. We should love God because he first loved us and paid all our debt through his crucifixion. Greater love has no man than this than to lay down ones’ life for his friends (John 15:13).
‘All things work together for those who love God’. This scripture is conditional, all things work together not for everyone but only those who love God. So we cannot claim this scripture for ourselves if we do not truly love God. When terrible things happen to people who do not love God, those things do not work together for them. We cannot expect the blessing of God to come on us if we do not follow his principles or commands.
Benefits of loving God
If we love God and obey him, some things become automatic blessings and we do not have to pray about them.
“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
Psalm 91:14-16
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”
3. Obey God
Trust and obey, for there is no other way, to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey. This is a song that was thought in children’s service quiet often. God prefers obedience to sacrifice. King Saul out of impatience did what was forbidden by God, offering sacrifice. This was the role of the Prophet Samuel but when he delayed, King Saul became impatient. That was how he lost his kingship to David (1 Samuel 15:22).
If we obey God we will experience his blessing, contrarily if we disobey God we accumulates curses. The benefits of obedience and curses for disobedience are found in Deuteronomy 28.
4. Honour God’s Servants (Pastors, Prophets, Church leaders etc)
And when David had finished offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts. Then he distributed among all the people, among the whole multitude of Israel, both the women and the men, to everyone a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a cake of raisins. So all the people departed, everyone to his house.
Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows hamelessly uncovers himself!”
2 Samuel 6:18-20
Michal did not honour King David her husband as her husband and also as a servant of God. Although King David blessed the Israelites because they honoured him, David was not able to bless his own home. If we dishonour people God brings our way we may miss our blessing.
Jesus himself was not able to perform many miracles in his hometown because they did not receive him as a prophet but as a carpenter’s son, they missed their miracles. Jesus’s brothers doubted him too (John 7:5). God sent Jesus to the world to save it, those who received him, he gave the right to become the sons of God.
5. Build God’s house
Nehemiah built the wall of Jerusalem after hearing that it was in ruins. The wall of Jerusalem was a symbol of God’s protection on his people and had to be rebuilt. Nehemiah obtained the king’s favour to go and build the wall. He received escort and materials from the King for his journey. What a blessing!
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me. They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.
Nehemiah 2:17-18
Solomon built the temple of God and God gave him a promise.
The word of the Lord came to Solomon: “As for this temple you are building, if you follow my decrees, observe my laws and keep all my commands and obey them, I will fulfill through you the promise I gave to David your father. And I will live among the Israelites and will not abandon my people Israel.”
1 kings 6:11-13
Solomon set the ark of the covenant of the Lord, (the presence of God) in the inner sanctuary within the temple. Now the presence of God is within us not in the physical place of worship. We must keep ourselves holy because we carry the presence of God and it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy”(1 Peter 1:16).
Jesus was angry that the house of God, a place for prayer has become a market place. Prostitution and sex work and all forms of sexual immorality falls under trading our bodies or merchandising ourselves. Sexual immorality defiles the temple of God and has terrible consequences.
If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.
1 Corinthians 3:17
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Matthew 6:33
